Why (or when) should I create a Sub-task?
Creating a sub-task is one way LifeStarr helps you stay organized and work efficiently! If a task can't be done in one action, you should consider creating sub-tasks.
Here's an example:
TASK - Schedule my physical. That would be one action which would be calling the doctor.
TASK - Schedule family physicals. There would be more than one action since it would involve calling several doctors for all family members. Creating sub-tasks would be appropriate in this situation and would turn your task into a project.
PROJECT - Schedule family physicals
- Sub-task named Schedule Susie's physical
- Sub-task named Schedule my physical
- Sub-task named Schedule Joey's physical
After each call, you can put the appointment on your calendar and mark the sub-task complete. Wait, what if your doctor was away on vacation? The sub-task would remain open until your doctor returned. It would stay on your My To-Dos list to remind you that it needed to be done.
Now let's go one step further... What if Susie's doctor wanted blood work before her physical? You would create a sub-task, named Schedule Susie's blood work, inside of sub-task #1 named Schedule Susie's physical.
PROJECT - Schedule family physicals
- Sub-task named Schedule Susie's physical
- Sub-task named Schedule Susie's blood work
- Sub-task named Schedule my physical
- Sub-task named Schedule Joey's physical
Here's another example:
TASK - Sign Starbucks' new lease. That would be one action.
TASK - Process Starbucks' new lease. There would be more than one action since it would involve reviewing the lease, making any revisions, signing the lease, and distributing the lease. Creating sub-tasks would be appropriate in this situation and would turn your task into a project.
PROJECT - Process Starbucks' new lease
- Sub-task named Send Starbucks lease to Joe to review and approve
- Sub-task named Send Starbucks lease to Matt for signature
- Sub-task named Send Starbucks the executed lease
When each sub-task is done, you mark the sub-task complete. Wait, what if Matt is out of town? The sub-task would remain open until he returned. It would stay on your My To-Dos list to remind you that it needed to be done.
Now let's go one step further... What if Matt sent a message that he wants it signed by Brian in his absence? You would create a sub-task, named Get Brian's signature on Starbucks lease, inside of sub-task #2 named Send Starbucks lease to Matt for signature.
PROJECT - Process Starbucks' new lease
- Sub-task named Send Starbucks lease to Joe to review and approve
- Sub-task named Send Starbucks lease to Matt for signature
- Sub-task named Get Brian's signature on Starbucks lease
- Sub-task named Send Starbucks the executed lease
LifeStarr will keep track of it all for you!
